  3. known as `the mad priest of Kent'. A follower
  4. of John Wycliffe and a believer in social
  5. equality, he was imprisoned for disagreeing
  6. with the archbishop of Canterbury. During the
  7. revolt he was released from prison, and when
  8. in Blackheath, London, preached from the text
  9. `When Adam delved and Eve span, who was then
  10. the gentleman?' When the revolt collapsed he
  11. escaped but was captured near Coventry and
  12. executed.
